Sigur Ros @ Greek Theatre
by Mark

Rumor has it that during Sigur Ros performances, the sheer overwhelming beauty of their pieces cause grown men to shed all traits of masculinity and suddenly break down and cry. I wasn’t sure how valid this statement was or where it originated from, but I can assure you that when I bought my ticket, I was expecting a good cry to be a part of the experience. With this knowledge in the back of my mind I went into this concert with a box of Kleenex and extremely high expectations.

Having arrived to the show about a bit late, I missed most of the opening act, Parachutes, another Icelandic band that played that kind of dreamy ambiance pop very similar to Sigur Ros. There were several occasions however, when they sounded a little too similar (not that sounding like Sigur Ros is ever a bad thing). Unfortunately, I can’t really say much about this band, but everything I heard for those ten or so minutes sounded very promising. I’d say to definitely give them a shot on recording. After this brief taste of Icelandic magic, my anticipation had only grown. I held my box of Kleenex closely, ready for Sigur Ros. (more…)

Tasty Apples
by Sara

So about a month ago, a friend of mine who works at the Beverly Center Apple Store helped a random guy buy a computer. Little did he know, this would result in a partially-complementary dining experience for two at one of Hollywood’s tastiest restaurants.

As it turned out, the “random guy” in need of a new Mac was in fact a chef at Ketchup, a trendy little Hollywood restaurant allegedly owned by Ashton Klutcher.

Considering its trendy, upscale image, the food the restaurant serves might come as a bit of a surprise. You’ll be less likely to find “exotic” foods here than American staples such as hamburgers, fries, hotdogs and steak, despite the fancy, modern decor.

Because we had been invited for a meal, we were treated to extra special service (at a place that ordinarily has good service anyway). Samples of various appetizers were brought out for us to try, for free, and they were all incredibly delicious. First up was the “3 Some” - THREE different kinds of fries and FIVE different varieties of… you guessed it… Ketchup. Each of them was distinct, and yet delicious in its own way. I made a point to try each different fry with each variety of Ketchup. I would share my favorite combinations, but I think it would take away from the experience of trying them all yourself should you decide to eat there. Next up came mini hotdogs and mini cheeseburgers. These were anything but the traditional greasy fast food burger. Instead, they were “childhood favorites, recreated with an upscale, gourmet twist.” They were all very good, and somehow also quite filling for their size.

Around the same time, a cart came by offering free drink samples (in exchange for tips). It seems the restaurant had decided that by offering free samples of its fabulous beverages, it could encourage more people to purchase drinks. I wish I’d written this review a bit earlier, as I can’t remember the exact names of the drinks I tried. I know I tried one with tequila in it, and my friend tried some sort of grape concoction (the only two they offered free samples of), and then we swapped to try the other. I ended up ordering a variation on a Cosmopolitan, which no doubt had a clever name I don’t remember.

For a main entree, I highly recommend the “shake-n-bake” chicken with sauteed vegetables. It was excellent - especially the sauce, and so good in fact, that I couldn’t stop eating it until it was all gone. By the time I finished it, I was so full (between the appetizers and the main course) that I could hardly stand up to leave. My friend felt the same after trying the “Deliverance,” a Jack Daniel’s-glazed, double cut pork chop with cheddar grits, apple sauce, and salad.

All and all, Ketchup is an excellent restaurant, although ordinarily it would be a bit pricey… were it not for our Apple store luck. I would definitely go back again sometime, and I highly recommend dining there if you get the chance.

People Under The Stairs (myspace)

The legendary Los Angeles based hip hop group People Under The Stairs put out a new album titled FUN D.M.C. and it is BUMPING with flavor. These dudes have been making beats and spitting verse since 1998, with 4 albums under their belts… my favorite of which is Stepfather…. they rock the underground hip hop scene with their jazzy funky beats. Their verse is witty and their production is excellent, every song gives off a sense of indulgence, makes you wanna take a dip in a pool. With such soulful samples complementing topics of bbq’s, food joints, and chill kickbacks, how can you not indulge?

And if you enjoy their music, you will love their live shows. I just saw them in Long Beach at the ever so intimate but crowded Fingerprints record store. There, they showcased a few new songs off the album and went on to take requests from the crowd. A few loyal fans had driven all the way from afar and already knew every word to every song on the new album. The crowd got so involved and People Under The Stairs returned the favor by providing one of the better hip hop performances I have seen in my lifetime.

Anyway all their albums are 10 bucks so I would buy one… they’re also playing at Fat Beats on Melrose this saturday at 5pm. Its free! You wont be disapointed.

Grrr…izzly Bear!
by trojanmanfan11

So this week has been a busy one.  I started my new job, had a midterm and needed to schedule a dentist appointment for my wisdom teeth to be removed, so its needless to say I haven’t had much time to blog.  However I have had some time to check out some good new music.  My friend introduced to a song called “Knife” by the Brooklyn band “Grizzly Bear” and I have to say it is a song to behold.  Very ethereal and moody complete with haunting moans and crisp soft guitar in the background.  It sounds kinda like Radiohead “Kid A” but a little more poppy.  Heres the video for the song which has an extra dose of creepiness to it, which makes it even cooler. Enjoy.

p.s. Don’t set your toaster oven to “dark” to make pop tarts.

A Millie (Obama Style)…and Some Sweet Reggae
by Reddingt

So, I know everyone is really excited to know that there is yet another remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Millie” floating around, to complement the 10-millie-on other ones out there. Well, there is. It’s Obama style, and it’s made by A.P.T. Hopefully Bangladesh won’t be too offended…

Here it is, check it out:

Okay, so I won’t blame you if you didn’t listen to anything past the first 10 seconds, but you’ve gotta admit that was pretty funny.

Now this one here is a little bit older, but it’s actually one you might listen to a lot more times (I have). Vote for whoever you want, but this tune sure is catchy!

Coco Tea - Barack Obama:

To be fair, I did check around to see if there were any McCain songs. If you’re interested, check out Jordan Rich’s “Raisin’ McCain.”

Music Television
by Perez

True Blood makes me love country. Not Shania Twain pop country, but true, bluesy blue grassy country, and the kind of music that traces its roots back to the old country twang.  It might just be that my obsession with the show has sunk to freakish levels of nerd-dom, but I walk away from every episode mimicking a southern accent and hankering to listen to some Jessie Coulter. For those not so into the show, the musical selection is really good, and has a lot to offer in the way of an introduction to country, a musical genre hitherto much misunderstood by myself (and, I suspect, many others). Here’re the top songs they’ve played so far:

“Lake Charles” Lucinda Williams

“Stumble and Pain” Joseph Arthur

“Bones” Little Big Town

“Two Wheels” Alligator Stew

“Honky Tonk Queen” Big Sandy &  His Fly-Rite Boys

“Snake in the Grass” Vallejo

“Far Far Away” Wilco

“Downtown” Alex Chilton

“Good Times” Charlie Robison

“Brand New Cadillac” Wayne Hancock

“Sparks Fly Out” Paul Burch

“Feel Alright” Steve Earle

“I Play Chicken With the Train” Cowboy Troy

Something for everyone.
